Agency offers 18 months of Temporary Protected Status to citizens of disaster-stricken countries.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced this week that they are extending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua living in the United States. This will allow more than 300,000 immigrants to remain in the U.S. for an additional 18 months, from now until the beginning of 2025.
The department monitors areas of the world to assess the safety challenges migrants may be fleeing.
“Through the extension of Temporary Protected Status, we are able to offer continued safety and protection to current beneficiaries… who are already present in the United States and cannot return because of the impacts of environmental disasters,” said Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “We will continue to offer support to them through this temporary form of humanitarian relief.”
